Set between ancient forest and the forest-green waters of Puget Sound at the very edge of the continental US, Anacortes, Washington, population 17,000 sees a lot come and go. Ferries docked here delivers thousands of itinerant hippies, millionaires, and sightseers to farms and mansions dotting the remote San Juan Islands while Navy bombers and helicopters based nearby perform ear-splitting flyovers. Through all the coming and going, the local DIY community remains remarkably consistent and strong; an expression of defiant, end-of-the-line creativity. From that community come The Lonely Forest, a rock band of four Anacortes natives with no intention of leaving.

From the outset The Lonely Forest —singer/guitarist/keyboardist John Van Deusen, guitarist Tony Ruland, drummer Braydn Krueger, and bassist Eric Sturgeon— has been about inclusion. In 2005, a raucous garage session inspired the guys (Braydn, Tony, and Eric) to join forces with Van Deusen’s piano-pop. The newly formed entity, now called The Lonely Forest, played their first show while two band members were still in high school (the other two having recently graduated). Since that show, The Lonely Forest have racked up miles; steadily becoming heroes of the Northwest all-ages scene through relentless gigging around the region. From their first show at the Department of Safety, center of Anacortes’ all-ages DIY scene, to their high-profile appearance at Bumbershoot 2009, a sold-out concert at the Showbox in Seattle last fall and a coveted spot on 2010’s Sasquatch Festival, the accolades for The Lonely Forest have grown along with their fanbase.

As grows their fanbase, The Lonely Forest 's music is continually expanding and evolving. At its core, the music features Van Deusen's soaring vocals and keyboard melodies wrapped tightly around Ruland's expansive guitar anchored by a heavy yet nimble rhythm section. The contrast of brilliant pop songs featuring lyrics about spiritual longing wedded to an almost prog-rock sensibility appeals to broad swath of listeners, from wide-eyed teenagers to jaded scenesters. As always, inclusion is important to these guys!

The Lonely Forest will continue their steady climb to prominence from modest Northwest roots with the March 22nd release of their new album, Arrows, for Chris Walla's label imprint, Trans Records. Walla, guitarist and producer for Grammy-nominated rock band Death Cab for Cutie, made The Lonely Forest his first signing when he launched Trans with the support of Death Cab for Cutie’s major label home, Atlantic Records. Trans and The Lonely Forest will be released through ILG, Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group. In addition to his role as label head, Walla produced and mixed Arrows at Sound City studio in Los Angeles, Tiny Telephone in San Francisco and his own, Portland-based studio, Alberta Court. He also mixed three tracks - “Be Everything,” “Turn Off This Song” and “Live There.” The rest of the album was mixed by John Goodmanson (Girls, Nada Surf, Owl City).

Just moved to the Puget Sound area last year from Ft. Lauderdale. I was flipping through radio stations, setting presets when I came accross "We Sing In Time" playing on the End. Totally freakin' blew me away . . . I mean "WOW." When you guys make it big, which I guarantee you will, please, please don't ever change your sound. Great success bra . . . N

I absolutely love you guys! You are all soo talented! John's voice is amazing! I saw your band when you were playing with Two Door Cinema Club and Bombay Bicycle Club at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio. You sound just like your recording when you perform live..sooo amazing! It was such a good night. I was able to meet John and get a pic with him in the bar, and I was able to talk to Tony a little bit and get a pic with him as well! BEST. DAY. OF. MY. LIFE. !!! If you ever come to Michigan or near Michigan I will definitely be coming to your shows! Hoping I will be able to see you perform again :)

You guys are so amazing. I first saw you in Vegas with Two Door Cinema Club and instantly fell in love with your music. And to make it even better, you guys are all just really nice! A lot of bands are kind of stuck up, have no emotion, or don't acknowledge the audience at all, but with you guys, I just felt that you are so real. I met you guys after the Vegas show outside, and then again at your show in Vegas with Minus the Bear. I kept thanking Eric when I bought a shirt and CD, and he was like, 'no, thank you guys' AH, you guys are just SO NICE. And then after that, I went into a gift shop with my friends, and John came out of a restaurant he was eating in just to talk to us! I cant stop thinking about that night, it really was the best of my life. Im sure nobody will read this, but I just wanted to put it out there. Im definitely going to be making a trip out to Anacortes to see one of your shows because it just seems so, 'charming' there, and I really want to see what its like. Umm, yeah. so.. Expect to be seeing me, Chloe, and my friends at every single one of your Vegas shows, and at least one in Anacortes. We absolutely adore you guys as people, and as a band. Thanks again so much, meeting you guys has made my year, and your music is pretty much all I listen to now. Hopefully this didn't sound like some creepy fan letter, I just wanted to let you guys know how much you mean to me! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Lately I've been so stressed out from watching the various news programs scroll across my screen.. I tend to mix in late night comedy in hopes that it'll come easier to hear and guess what I found? Your debut with "We Sing In Time" on Jimmy Kimmel Live.. Immediately after hearing a few words, I felt so much better. I felt as if a burden had been lifted, and I just wanted to let you know how comforting it was to hear you play. I hope your band achieves everything it could ask for and more. Thank you. - Christine

I stumbled across the "We Sing In Time" video on YouTube. I was hooked right away. More importantly, my four-year-old son who is severely autistic, came running into the room to see where this sound was coming from. He rarely responds to outside stimulus this way, so I sat him down and played everything we could find. He was captivated and smiling. This is beyond special. Thank you so much for this beautiful, profound music. It's not hyperbole to say that you have a changed a life. :)

I recently heard We Sing In Time and I was instantly hooked. Did a little search on the web, bought Arrows (deluxe version) on Amazon, and FELL IN LOVE with the entire album. Can't stop listening to it. "Give to me miles of tall evergreens, and the smell of the ocean, and cool mountain breeze" ... makes me cry every time. I was born and raised in Western Washington and like TLF, I too have no intention of leaving. I could give you a rundown on every song on the album and why they are all BRILLIANT, but if you are here, then you surely already know :) Keep making Washington proud TLF. Wishing you the huge success you deserve and looking forward to more albums in the future!

My wife Jana and I just saw The Lonely Forest in concert for the first time. It was certainly worth the three hour drive from Idaho to Salt Lake. I was really impressed with the quality of the music, from the guitar playing to the drumming to the vocals, and especially the lyrics. I talked to several of the band members after their set and watched as they talked to other concert goers. They were genuinely enthusiastic towards their fans, and all the guys seemed really nice. The Arrows album is really good as well, except for having had several different songs stuck in my head for hours at a time (curse your catchy tunes, TLF!) - and I've only had the album for just over a day. ~Joseph Ryner

Snazzy website and great about section. It has been such a pleasure to watch you guys go from small gatherings to teaming venues. I have been such a fan over the years. You all deserve every bit of success for your thousands of hours of dedication and work. Not to mention your all some of the most genuine and loving people. What you see is really what you get with you four and in my eyes that is really why you have made it this far. A true example that if you set out for something you can really achieve it. I love you guys and can't wait to see you in the near future! -Ken
